Weekly Topics: Reading Street Unit 1 Week 4, Math Topic 1

Reading:

What is the author's purpose of writing a text? Authors use different words to indicate if they are writing to persuade, inform, or entertain. Using the acronym PIE you can ask your child to tell you what it would sound like to persuade someone to like or dislike pie, to give information, and to tell an entertaining story about pie.

Spelling:

Our new spelling pattern is words with Long E sounds ------>

Language:

Compound sentences are two sentences combined with and, or, or but. We have also began to learn about idioms and so moving forward your child should be able to identify idioms on weekly homework.

Math:

Connecting multiplication and division facts together. On the Back to School night note, I wrote of the importance of multiplication facts in fourth grade. We have began to work on multiplication testing and many students are struggling to pass of their 2's and 3's. Please ask your child where they are and practice accordingly.

Science:

The Water Cycle- Things to know: evaporation, condensation, transpiration, precipitation, run-off, the sun provides energy
Weather- this is an easy to review topic. As you are driving ask your child about the weather and what a weather forecaster may say about the weather. (i.e. high pressure, low pressure, cloud types, thunderstorms, sunny, etc...)

Spelling:

Our new spelling pattern is words with Long U sounds. Our test will be on Thursday, September 17

Language:

Sentence structure. Can your child write a complete sentence with details and punctuation? Encourage your child to write in full ideas and to correct their spelling.

Math:

Finding patterns in numbers using our four basic operations. Creating a rule written in words and symbols to represent the pattern.
Example:  2, 6,18, __ ; the next number would be 54 because our rule is to multiply each number by 3. In symbols that would be n*3. n standing for any number that we want to use or could use.

Calling All 4th Graders to National Parks!

Have you ever seen the fourth grade program? You probably have heard us sing "national parks are here in Utah.... Utah! there's no place like Utah..." You are welcome if that song just got stuck in your head. If not, your child will be learning the song later this year in preparation for our school presentation of Utah History. Anyways, all fourth graders are being offered a free park pass for the school year (and summer). I have a code for every child and will send them with their voucher tomorrow. This paper will be their pass until you are able to get a card. The voucher codes are unique and so you will want to make sure to take care of this paper. Rules and regulations are listed on the back.  Enjoy!!

How To: Finding 4th Grade Appropriate Books

The goal for fourth grade is for all students to be within
the "Stretch Lexile Band" range.
    In one of the sessions at Back to School Night we discussed age and level appropriate books. I expressed my concern with Diary of a Wimpy Kid as the Lexile Level for most of the books are around 1060LL. If you look at the chart on the right, even with recent increases that level is far above 4th and 5th grade level.

What is Lexile Anyways?

     Students and books are given a number representing their understanding of vocabulary and the readability of the books. While books that are of a higher or lower level can be entertaining, the full reading experience is decreased and benefits of reading can be lost.

How do I find the LL of a Book?

www.lexile.com, Search for your book and a page like the one above should pop up
giving you a number score for the lexile level.
You have just searched for a book and now what? Take a look at the green circle and evaulate the score. If you are interested in trying a book that may push your child a bit, take a look further on the page at the Vocabulary Words section. There will be a list of vocabulary that will be in the book that may be difficult to understand.
The other thing that I like is that there is an "Expected Comprehension" score if you type in your child's approximate score. You will get a definite score in October. I thought the test was going to be available in September and it is not until October. For now, ball park around the beginning fourth grade levels on the stretch band for the good readers out there. Too difficult? Take it down to the high 600's or low 700's.

Popular Titles & Lexiles :

* Percy Jackson Series  (630)
*Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone ( 880)
*Harry Potter & the Chambers of Secrets (990)- appropriateness beyond this book is a personal household decision
*Charlotte's Web (680)
* Holes (660)
*Frindle (830)
*Michael Vey (530)
* To Kill a Mockingbird (790)
*Mr. Popper's Penguins (990)

Here you can find another great website to find books for your child in the 700 LL range. Actually, any range but the link will take you to the 700's.  I hope this helps a bit. Let me know what I can do to support you at home!

Welcome to Fourth Grade!

        We are so excited to start this new school year with you and your child. Fourth grade is a great year! In fourth grade your child will begin to take the skills of reading and basic math computations and apply them to more complex, higher thinking situations.
         Each week we will post the skills that we are working on for the week and upcoming dates to be aware of. We will post about projects and give details to questions you may have.
          Weekly visits are suggested in order to accommodate for a schedule that is always changing! Also, you can find files here of some important papers. We have attached the Back to School Night information here:
